West Fargo firefighters have begun to train for active assailants through the use of the Rescue Task Force; a group of firefighters and law enforcement that enters a scene after initial teams are dispatched, to treat life threatening injury at the point of injury. Then, other fire department units assist in evacuating patients to the medical branch, where they are transported. Firefighters participated in a “Stop the Bleed” class based off the principles of Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) which is to treat preventable causes of death in combat or austere environments. The classes were taught jointly by FM Ambulance and Red River Valley SWAT medics.
The groups then participated in hands on drills with the West Fargo Police Department yesterday, to refine their skills and put the entire process together. All West Fargo firefighters, both career and volunteer, will be trained in the concepts of TCCC and Rescue Task Force over the next year.
