Late this morning, West Fargo Fire & Rescue responded to a hazardous materials incident in the 2000 block of Main Ave E. While traveling back to West Fargo after a meeting at Fargo Fire Headquarters, Chief-1 came across a 5 gallon pail of liquid that had appeared to have been hit by a car and ruptured. After a brief investigation, it was determined the product spilled was Potassium Hydroxide.
A hazmat response was requested; Engine 71 and Battalion 70 responded to the scene. Additional staff came to the stations to respond to any additional calls. Spill-dry was used to absorb the material, which was then placed in plastic bags and an overpack drum. The shipping company took control of the product and contaminated spill dry, while fire units returned to service. During the incident, two lanes of Main Ave westbound were shut down to traffic while crews worked.
